Ghanaian music icon Sarkodie is set to stage his annual Rapperholic Concert in Kumasi for the first time this September — a landmark moment for the Ashanti capital, backed by the endorsement of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
The Baba Yara Sports Stadium will host the mega music event on Saturday, 27 September 2025, bringing one of Africa’s biggest rap shows to the heart of Ghana’s cultural capital.
Sarkodie, born Michael Owusu Addo, revealed that the idea of hosting Rapperholic in Kumasi had been in the pipeline for over a decade. His long-awaited vision took a decisive step forward when he led a delegation to the Manhyia Palace on Friday, 19 July, to formally request the blessing of the Asante King.
“For almost 12 years, I’ve wanted to bring Rapperholic to Kumasi. I believe now is the right time,” Sarkodie told the King. “I’m here humbly to ask for your support, Nana.”
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II gave his full endorsement and promised to attend the concert in person, praising Sarkodie’s humility and enduring success.
“I’m glad to see you again. May your career continue to grow. Stay grounded and true to yourself. I will be there to witness it myself,” the King said.
Despite the excitement, concerns have been raised over the concert’s timing, which comes just weeks before continental football fixtures scheduled at the same venue. In previous years, the Baba Yara Stadium has faced scrutiny from the Confederation of African Football (CAF), including a temporary suspension due to pitch quality.
Observers fear that the concert — if not managed carefully — could once again compromise the playing surface ahead of key fixtures in Ghana’s football calendar.
However, organisers are already in discussions with the National Sports Authority (NSA) to ensure safeguards are in place. Measures such as reinforced pitch covers and post-event rehabilitation are expected to be included in the logistics plan.
Since its debut in Accra in December 2012, the Rapperholic Concert has grown into one of West Africa’s most recognisable live music events. The decision to move this year's edition to Kumasi, a city known for its rich cultural and musical heritage, has been met with enthusiasm across the Ashanti Region and beyond.
This marks a significant milestone not only for Sarkodie’s brand but also for the decentralisation of major entertainment events in Ghana — shifting the spotlight beyond the usual urban strongholds.
Sarkodie is expected to headline the show alongside a lineup of surprise acts from Ghana and abroad, with early projections pointing to a sell-out crowd.
The concert is also expected to boost the local economy, particularly in the hospitality, transportation, and creative sectors, with fans travelling from across the country and diaspora to attend.
