Member of Parliament for Asutifi North, Ebenezer Kwaku Addo, has refuted allegations that he led a mob to assault officers of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) in the Ahafo Region.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem morning show, Dr. Addo dismissed the claims as baseless and illogical, insisting he had no involvement in any attack on the taskforce.
“It is not true. I have not led any mob action to attack NAIMOS. The taskforce is doing a great job, so why would I even think of mobilizing people to attack them? Even as an MP, that makes no sense,” he stated.
The MP clarified that the incident occurred in Asutifi South, not his constituency. He explained that he was on his way to a funeral when he came across the commotion and stopped to assess the situation after informing Asutifi South MP, Collins Dauda.
“I called Hon. Collins Dauda, and he asked me to check what was happening since I was closer to the scene. I even introduced myself to the military and handed them my phone so they could speak with him directly,” Dr. Addo recounted.
He added that he helped maintain peace, calling community leaders to intervene when tensions escalated, and denied mobilizing anyone to attack the taskforce.
“I only wanted to restore calm. When the situation worsened, I called some community leaders, including a Muslim chief, to help bring peace. At no point did I lead or incite an attack,” he emphasized.
Dr. Addo questioned the rationale behind the accusations, describing them as politically motivated.
“Why would I lead over 600 people to attack NAIMOS when I was even on my way to a funeral? The area isn’t even my constituency. I rather commend the military for exercising restraint,” he added.
His response follows a statement from the Bureau of Public Safety (BPS), which condemned the attack on NAIMOS officers at Bronikrom near Hwidiem and called for the immediate arrest and investigation of the MP and all alleged accomplices.
The BPS described the violent incident, which involved the assault of the NAIMOS Director of Operations and his team, as a clear obstruction of law enforcement officers in the discharge of their duties and urged authorities to act swiftly.
