Athletic Bilbao's coach, Ernesto Valverde, has expressed concern over the upcoming absence of star striker Inaki Williams, who will be representing Ghana in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) from January 13 to February 11, 2024.
Williams, having scored six league goals this season, holds a pivotal role in Athletic Bilbao's performance.
Valverde acknowledges that his absence during the AFCON will be a significant blow to the team but remains confident that they can maintain their form until his departure.
"Inaki is always in a good place. By the time he goes to the AFCON, we will start by being sharp but at the moment, we will go through at least December without any problems. We will lament his absence but we will see how things will turn out," Valverde reassured the media.
Ghana, placed in Group B of the AFCON alongside Egypt, Mozambique, and Cape Verde, looks to end their 41-year trophy drought, with Williams aiming to make history with the Black Stars.
Currently positioned fifth in the La Liga standings, Athletic Bilbao hopes to sustain their form until Williams' return from the tournament.
The striker, who recently scored his first goal for Ghana, is expected to play a crucial role for the Black Stars in Ivory Coast.
