Former Asante Kotoko and AshantiGold SC right-back Attah Kusi has expressed regret over pursuing a football career in Ghana, citing persistent financial difficulties and the absence of adequate player welfare measures.
Kusi, who has played for top-tier clubs such as Asante Kotoko, King Faisal, AshantiGold, and Bibiani Gold Stars, admitted that despite his years in the Ghana Premier League, he has little to show for his efforts.
He described the financial hardships he has endured, often relying on friends in manual trades like mechanics and electricians for support.
"Honestly, I regret playing football. It pains me that I didn't learn a trade or further my education. If I had, I'd be earning a better salary than what I get from playing football in this country," Kusi said in a heartfelt revelation.
"Whenever I reflect on my career, playing for big clubs like Kotoko and AshantiGold, I'm filled with pity. It's humiliating to have to beg for pocket money."
Kusi also pointed to the lack of insurance for footballers in Ghana as a critical issue, making the profession highly precarious. He highlighted the risk of career-ending injuries and their devastating financial consequences.
"I would advise all upcoming players to work hard and seek opportunities outside the country. It's extremely challenging to make a successful career as a footballer here.
Moreover, the lack of insurance for players means that a single injury can bring your career to a premature end," he added.
The former defender’s candid remarks shed light on the broader issue of inadequate player compensation and welfare in Ghanaian football.
The debate around introducing measures such as a salary cap to protect player welfare has gained traction, with stakeholders urging reforms to improve conditions in the local league.
Currently a free agent, Kusi’s reflections serve as a cautionary tale for aspiring players, emphasizing the need to explore opportunities abroad to secure a more stable and rewarding football career.
