Zambia and Orlando Pride forward Barbra Banda has been honored as the BBC Women’s Footballer of the Year, capturing the majority of votes from BBC Sport readers after a phenomenal year on both the international and club stages.
The 24-year-old led a competitive shortlist of five nominees announced last month.
Her inclusion was based on stellar performances between September 2023 and August 2024, as evaluated by a panel of global football experts, including coaches, players, and journalists.
Overwhelmed by the recognition, Banda expressed her gratitude upon receiving the prestigious award. “I am shocked and surprised to have this award right by my side,” she said.
“I would like to thank the people who voted and everyone who has played a part in my life and career – my family, my national team in Zambia, and especially the Pride team. This is for everyone.”
Banda’s achievements throughout the year were nothing short of remarkable. She lit up the Paris Olympics, netting four goals for Zambia, including an incredible first-half hat-trick against Australia.
Her tally of 10 Olympic goals established her as Africa’s all-time leading scorer in the history of the competition.
At the club level, Banda joined Orlando Pride in March and made an immediate impact.
She scored 13 goals during the regular season of the 2024 National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) and added four more during the playoffs.
Her decisive goal in the championship final secured Orlando Pride’s first-ever league title and earned her the league’s Most Valuable Player (MVP) award.
Spain and Barcelona star Aitana Bonmatí, who played a pivotal role in her club’s and country’s triumphs, finished second in the BBC voting, while USA and Portland Thorns forward Sophia Smith claimed third place.
Banda’s outstanding year has cemented her status as one of the brightest talents in women’s football.
