A pupil of Falahiyat E/A Primary School Block “A” in the Savannah Region is currently receiving treatment at St. Anne’s Catholic Hospital in Damongo after reportedly being severely beaten by his class teacher.
The victim, a Basic Five learner, was allegedly assaulted by a teacher identified as Mr. Fatawu during a classroom exercise on Tuesday, January 20.
Narrating the incident, the boy’s father, Abdul Wahidu Mahama, explained that the teacher had given a homework assignment which his son scored two out of eight.
As punishment for the poor performance, the pupil and some of his classmates were allegedly instructed to lie across dual desks in the classroom.
Mr. Fatawu is said to have then whipped the children repeatedly with a wire cane, striking their backs and other parts of their bodies.
“My son tried to shield himself with his hand, but the teacher continued flogging him and insulting them for not doing well,” Mr. Mahama told Citi FM in Accra.
The following day, the boy reportedly began experiencing intense pain in his hand. When home remedies failed to bring relief, the family rushed him to St. Anne’s Catholic Hospital.
Doctors admitted him, administered treatment and later scheduled him for surgery. The operation was successfully performed on Tuesday, January 27, around 10 a.m.
According to the distressed father, the teacher has not visited the hospital since the incident.
“He has not come to check on my son at all,” Mr. Mahama said, adding that Mr. Fatawu only showed up at their home once after the child’s mother reached out to him.
Meanwhile, the school’s headmistress and another staff member have visited the hospital to assess the pupil’s condition.
Mr. Mahama is now calling on the Ghana Education Service (GES), the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service, and other authorities to step in and ensure the matter is thoroughly investigated.
“This is about protecting our innocent future assets,” he stressed.
