The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, is expected to brief President John Mahama on the outcome of the latest mediation session aimed at restoring lasting peace to the long-running Bawku conflict.
President Mahama appointed the Asantehene to lead the high-level peace initiative, which many hope will bring an end to years of violence and instability in the area. Monday’s session, held on December 1, 2025, marked a major breakthrough, with the Kusaasi and Mamprusi factions appearing together before the Asantehene for the first time since the mediation process began.
Security was heavy around the Manhyia Palace, where both delegations underwent strict screening before being escorted into the auditorium.
Sources say Otumfuo listened extensively to presentations from both sides, urged calm, and assured them of continued cooperation with the Presidency to resolve the protracted dispute.
Outside the palace, supporters of the two groups briefly clashed during celebrations following the meeting, prompting swift intervention from police and military personnel. Additional security was deployed to restore order.
Both factions are now awaiting formal communication from the Manhyia Palace on the next steps in the peace process.
