Nana Akomea, Chairman of the Communications Directorate for Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign, has rejected claims by Abetifi MP Bryan Acheampong that the former Vice President was largely responsible for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) defeat in the 2024 general elections.

Speaking on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo programme on Thursday, December 18, Akomea described Acheampong’s comments as personal opinions unsupported by evidence.

He noted that multiple independent pre-election surveys, including those by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), Afrobarometer, and Global InfoAnalytics had already projected an NPP loss, largely due to public dissatisfaction with economic conditions, unemployment, and the general cost of living.

“None of the reports identified Bawumia’s candidature as a cause of the defeat,” Akomea said. He added that post-election assessments conducted in 2025 by the Prof. Mike Oquaye-led committee investigating the party’s loss, as well as studies by the German think tank Konrad Adenauer Stiftung, reached similar conclusions.

According to him, the consistent finding across the reports was voter dissatisfaction with government performance, rather than the choice of presidential candidate. Akomea challenged Acheampong to provide a single credible survey to support his assertions.

Addressing the party’s upcoming internal elections, Akomea said recent research by Global InfoAnalytics and Konrad Adenauer Stiftung shows growing support for Dr. Bawumia among party delegates, contradicting claims that he was the main factor behind the NPP’s 2024 electoral defeat.
