Being an MP is one of the most ‘useless’ jobs; some beg for money – Eugene Antwi

Subin Member of Parliament (MP) Eugene Arhin has said being a lawmaker is one of the most useless jobs in Ghana.

The former Works and Housing Minister’s position, he explained is due to the burdens of constituents MPs have to bore.

According to him, there are some MPs who go around parliament begging their colleagues for money to settle one problem or the other.

However, Mr Antwi in an interview on Adom FM/TV,Monday expressed gratitude to his constituents for the opportunity to serve for eight years.

“People will call you every time making one demands or another and most of them too are lies. There are MPs who don’t even take home GH₵5,000 at the end of the month because of responsibilities.

“We spend a lot and it will be worse going into opposition. There are some MPs who go about begging in parliament so people must pity us,” he stated.

Mr Antwi further stressed that the plight of MPs who live within their constituencies are even worse.

“Some people go for loans to complete certain projects and up settling their loans throughout the four years. I know a colleague MP who was not given any appointment and stays in his constituency; he wakes up every morning with people in his house but you can’t say because of these things you will stop. One time you don’t get for them, they will threaten to vote you out. It is a sacrificial job,” he added.
