Berekum Chelsea have detailed the armed robbery attack on their team bus that led to the death of young winger Dominic Frimpong, in an incident that has shaken Ghanaian football.
In an official statement, the club said the attack occurred as the team travelled back to Berekum from Samreboi following their Ghana Premier League fixture against FC Samartex 1996.
According to the club, armed men blocked the road and forced the vehicle to stop before opening fire. The attackers, described as masked and carrying guns and assault rifles, reportedly began shooting as the driver attempted to reverse the bus to safety.
Players and officials were forced to flee into nearby bushes to escape the gunfire, in what the club described as a terrifying ordeal.
Berekum Chelsea confirmed that Frimpong died as a result of the attack, while another player sustained serious injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital before being referred to a regional facility for further treatment.
The club expressed gratitude to a police patrol team for their swift response, as well as local residents in Ahyiresu who provided temporary shelter to players and officials in the immediate aftermath.
They also acknowledged support from Bibiani Gold Stars and the president of the Ghana Football Association for their prompt intervention during the crisis.
The incident has sparked renewed concerns over the safety of teams travelling for domestic competitions, with increasing calls for stronger security measures across the league.
Berekum Chelsea said further updates would be provided as investigations continue, while expressing hope for the recovery of the injured player.
The tragedy has left the football community in mourning, raising urgent questions about player safety and the need for enhanced protection on matchday journeys.
