Bernard Kumi-Boateng becomes fourth Vice-Chancellor of UMaT

Professor Bernard Kumi-Boateng has assumed office as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), beginning a new phase of leadership at the institution.

A Geomatic Engineer and alumnus of UMaT, Prof. Kumi-Boateng becomes the fourth Vice-Chancellor in the university’s history. His appointment gives him responsibility for leading the institution where he received part of his academic training and to which he has contributed over the years.

Prof. Kumi-Boateng succeeds Professor Richard Kwasi Amankwah, who served as Vice-Chancellor for six years. The change in leadership marks the end of Prof. Amankwah’s tenure and the start of a new administration under a former student of the university.

His installation places an alumnus at the head of UMaT as it continues to pursue its mandate in mining, technology, engineering and related fields. Those areas remain central to the institution’s identity and academic purpose.

The appointment also represents a return for Prof. Kumi-Boateng, who now leads the university after having studied there and played a role in its development. His familiarity with UMaT links his new responsibilities to his earlier association with the institution as a student and contributor.

As the fourth person to hold the Vice-Chancellor’s office, Prof. Kumi-Boateng takes over at a significant point in the university’s leadership history. His term follows six years under Prof. Richard Kwasi Amankwah and places the direction of UMaT in the hands of a Geomatic Engineer with an established connection to the institution.

UMaT’s work is focused on advancing mining, technology, engineering and related disciplines. Prof. Kumi-Boateng is expected to build on that mandate in his new role, while drawing on his experience and knowledge of the university.

His elevation therefore combines continuity with a fresh leadership chapter. He is returning to lead the institution as an alumnus, while taking on the responsibility of succeeding a Vice-Chancellor who served for six years.

The installation confirms Prof. Kumi-Boateng as the latest holder of UMaT’s top leadership position and formally begins his tenure as Vice-Chancellor.
