President John Dramani Mahama has clarified that the newly launched Big Push infrastructure initiative is reserved for qualified and experienced contractors, not unqualified or small-scale operators.

Speaking at the official launch in Afienya, Accra, on Tuesday, September 16, the President addressed requests from what he referred to as “wheelbarrow contractors” seeking to benefit from the programme.

He firmly stated that the Big Push, which aims to accelerate national infrastructure development, cannot be compromised by unqualified individuals.

“There are a few wheelbarrow contractors who have come to me saying, ‘Oh, I hear they are distributing projects under the Big Push. I want one.’ I say, ‘My friend, this is not for wheelbarrow contractors.’ You are my friend, but I won’t give it to you because it is not meant for wheelbarrow contractors,” he said.

He emphasised that only capable contractors, both local and foreign, who are already managing active projects have been selected for the programme.

Some of these projects, awarded before his administration took office, have now been repackaged under the Big Push to ensure quicker completion.

The Big Push programme is central to the government’s goal of modernizing Ghana’s infrastructure and fostering economic growth.
