Björkegren ahead of England friendly: “A valuable test against one of the world’s best”

Ghana’s senior women’s national team, the Black Queens, will face European champions England in a landmark international friendly on December 2, 2025, at St. Mary’s Stadium in Southampton — marking the first-ever senior women’s meeting between the two nations.
Head coach Kim Lars Björkegren is embracing the challenge, describing the fixture as a crucial benchmark ahead of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
“England are probably in the top four in the world together with Spain, France, and the USA… They’re not just going to the World Cup to participate; they’re going to win it,” Björkegren told JoySports.

Tactical Test Ahead of WAFCON
Björkegren believes the clash will offer Ghana a rare opportunity to measure up against elite opposition, helping refine tactics, squad depth, and mental resilience.
“It’s a big game… the fact that they want to play against us is the most important thing.”
The match comes as Ghana ramps up preparations for WAFCON 2026, having qualified with a 7–0 aggregate win over Egypt, and aims to build on their bronze medal finish in Morocco 2024.
