Jerome Opoku has opened up about the challenges and growth that shaped his career, tracing a path from Fulham’s academy to the Ghana national team and European football.
After recovering from a serious ACL injury in 2017, Opoku returned to action in 2018 and quickly reestablished himself as captain of Fulham’s U-23 side. His first taste of senior football came on loan at Accrington Stanley, where he made 21 appearances in League One.
“Coming from Fulham’s academy to somewhere like Accrington Stanley was a big change… it made me appreciate the little things in football,” Opoku told RG.
“It toughened me up.”
Building Across Borders
- Plymouth Argyle: 33 appearances, regular starter at centre-back
- Velje Boldklub (Denmark): 29 games in the Danish SuperLiga
- Arouca (Portugal): Key figure in defense, helped club finish 5th and qualify for Europe
- Istanbul Başakşehir (Turkey): Current club, competing in top-tier Turkish football and Europe
Opoku’s steady rise through multiple leagues and cultures has shaped him into a versatile and mentally resilient defender, now making strides with the Black Stars.
Jerome Opoku made his Black Stars debut in October 2023 during a friendly game with the United States Men's National Team where Ghana lost 4-0. He would go on to represent the Black Stars in seven more games including five FIFA World Cup qualifiers. He has one goal to his name for the Black Stars as he scored a 90th minute equalizer as Ghana played out a 2-2 draw with Uganda in a friendly game back in March 2024.
He was pivotal in the Black Stars' impressive finish in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers as they sealed a historic fifth qualification to the global showpiece.
