Black stars forward Antoine Semenyo wins man of the match against Panama

Antoine Semenyo was named Player of the Match as Ghana kicked off their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign with a dramatic 1-0 victory over Panama, courtesy of Caleb Yirenkyi’s stoppage-time winner in Toronto.
The Black Stars appeared destined to settle for a frustrating draw after being tested throughout by a spirited Panama side. But deep into added time, Yirenkyi kept his composure to fire home the decisive goal, handing Ghana all three points in a contest defined by resilience and determination.
Panama made the brighter start, unsettling Ghana with quick attacking moves and creating several early openings. Goalkeeper Lawrence Ati Zigi proved equal to the challenge, producing a string of crucial saves to keep the score level as Ghana struggled to gain a foothold in midfield during a tense first half.
Ghana’s problems worsened when Ati Zigi was forced off through injury following a collision before the break. Benjamin Asare replaced him for the second half and slotted in confidently as the Black Stars gradually grew into the contest.
Semenyo, one of Ghana’s standout performers, inspired the team’s revival after the interval. The Manchester City forward’s relentless pressing, intelligent movement and ability to drive at defenders gave Panama’s backline plenty to contend with. His tireless display helped Ghana seize control as the Central Americans began to fade.
The breakthrough finally arrived in stoppage time. Substitute Brandon Thomas-Asante sparked a swift counterattack before threading a perfectly weighted pass into the penalty area. Yirenkyi timed his run to perfection and calmly slotted the ball beyond the goalkeeper, sparking jubilant celebrations among the Ghana supporters.
The goal marked the 20-year-old midfielder’s first competitive international strike and sealed a memorable victory for Otto Addo’s side.
Although Yirenkyi’s dramatic finish stole the headlines, Semenyo’s influential display over the full 90 minutes earned him the Player of the Match award, underlining his importance to Ghana’s performance.
The victory gives the Black Stars an ideal start to their World Cup campaign and strengthens their position in Group L following England’s win over Croatia. It also provides a timely confidence boost ahead of Ghana’s highly anticipated meeting with England.
For Ghana, this was a victory built on discipline, resilience and belief, qualities they will hope can carry them deeper into the tournament.
