Borussia Dortmund have announced plans to launch their first official international academy in Africa, choosing Ghana as the base for the landmark project.
The BVB International Academy Ghana is set to open in February 2026 and will provide structured football training for boys and girls aged between six and 18.
Dortmund say the academy will be built around the club’s well-known football philosophy, with a strong emphasis on high-performance standards, modern coaching methods and the holistic development of young players, both on and off the pitch.
The move represents a significant step in the Bundesliga club’s global expansion and underlines Ghana’s growing reputation as a major hub for football talent on the continent.
Ghana has long been recognised for producing players who have gone on to excel at the highest levels of European football, making the country a strategic choice for Dortmund’s first academy in Africa.
Club officials also revealed that coach education and community engagement will form a central part of the project, with the academy designed to contribute to the long-term development of football infrastructure in Ghana.
Borussia Dortmund now join a growing list of European clubs establishing academies across Africa, reflecting both the increasing competition for young talent and a wider investment in grassroots football on the continent.
For many young players in Ghana, the academy could offer a direct pathway into elite-level training, while strengthening ties between African football and one of Europe’s most recognisable clubs.
