Residents of the Bosome Freho District have expressed strong support for the government’s Nkoko Nketenkete programme, hailing it as a well-timed intervention expected to expand local poultry production, generate employment and cut down Ghana’s reliance on imported chicken products.

The initiative was officially launched at Anumso by the District Chief Executive (DCE), Charles Appiah-Kubi, as part of a national rollout aimed at distributing about three million birds across 276 constituencies. The programme is projected to benefit nearly 60,000 households nationwide.

Designed to improve the affordability of poultry products and boost access to protein-rich foods, the initiative also seeks to strengthen household incomes, particularly among smallholder farmers.

Addressing beneficiaries at the launch, Mr. Appiah-Kubi assured farmers of the government’s commitment to providing comprehensive support across the agricultural value chain to ensure consistent food supply.

He explained that the programme aligns with President John Dramani Mahama’s vision of revitalising backyard farming as a strategy to reduce poverty and empower rural households.

Reviving household poultry farming, he said, remains a key pillar in efforts to improve food security, enhance incomes and stimulate community-level economic growth.

The DCE added that the initiative goes beyond the distribution of birds, incorporating technical guidance and ongoing support to guarantee sustainability and long-term success.

He encouraged residents of the district to fully take advantage of the programme, noting that it offers a practical pathway to job creation, improved farming practices and higher earnings within local communities.

Emphasising the need for collective responsibility, Mr. Appiah-Kubi stressed that cooperation at the community level would be crucial to achieving lasting development outcomes. He also cautioned beneficiaries to handle the birds with care, describing them as delicate and underscoring proper management as essential to the programme’s success.

Speaking on behalf of the Anumso Traditional Council, the Adontenhene, Nana Akwasi Adu, commended the government for introducing the initiative, describing it as a potentially transformative intervention for local livelihoods.

He recalled that poultry farming was once a widespread household activity in the area but had declined over time due to modernisation and reduced interest among the youth. According to him, the Nkoko Nketenkete initiative provides an opportunity to revive this tradition and make poultry farming appealing and relevant once again.
