The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced that Cabinet has approved the absorption of 6,200 teachers who have been working for over eight months without receiving salaries.
Speaking at a press briefing at the Ministry of Education, Mr. Iddrisu said the decision comes in response to a formal petition submitted by the affected teachers regarding the prolonged delay in salary payments.
The Minister assured that the teachers will soon receive their staff ID numbers and payment of all outstanding salaries, adding that the move reflects the government’s commitment to resolving the matter permanently.
In addition, Mr. Iddrisu revealed that Cabinet has authorised the Minister of Finance to reallocate approximately GH¢1.1 billion to cover the absorption of both teachers and health workers who have been awaiting formal posting and salary validation.
“A few weeks ago, myself and the Chief Director received a petition from some teachers who were unhappy with the government over their unending work for a number of months without their pay,” he said. “I’m happy to announce that Cabinet has given approval for the 6,200 teachers to be absorbed. We’ll begin the process in due course," he said.
“Cabinet gave the Minister of Finance approval to vire about GH¢1.1 billion to absorb a category of health workers and teachers,” he said. “The process will start soon, so there’s no need for further picketing.”
