In a landmark development for African football, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the European Union have officially concluded on a historic partnership agreement that will see the EU become headline sponsors for a vast number of CAF’s flagship tournaments.

The agreement includes the continued support for the upcoming TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments for 2025 and 2027, the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations 2024, and the CAF African Schools Football Championship.

This alliance marks a noteworthy step forward in the advancement and development of football across the African continent. The partnership was formally signed on Monday, May 19, 2025, in Cairo, Egypt by CAF President Dr Patrice Motsepe and European Commissioner for International Partnerships Mr Jozef Síkela.

Speaking at the monumental ceremony, Dr Patrice Motsepe expressed his passion and keenness about the partnership:

“Our partnership reflects the mutual commitment of CAF and the European Union to the development and growth of African football, schools and youth football, as well as the expansion of cultural, trade, and investment relationships between our two continents. I would like to express my gratitude to the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, Jozef Síkela, and the EU for this exciting partnership.”

The collaboration is expected to provide a major boost to football infrastructure, talent development, and grassroots programs across Africa, while strengthening the ties between Africa and Europe through sport, culture, and shared values.
