The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has revealed that the draw for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers will take place on Thursday, July 4, 2024, in Johannesburg, South Africa.
A total of 48 nations, including the four winners from the preliminary round (Chad, Eswatini, Liberia, and South Sudan), will be divided into 12 groups of four teams each.
These groups will compete for spots at the finals of Africa’s premier football tournament.
Among the competing nations are reigning champions Ivory Coast and other African powerhouses such as Algeria, Cameroon, Ghana, Egypt, Nigeria, and Morocco, the host nation.
Additionally, teams like Zambia, South Africa, Angola, Gabon, Gambia, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Libya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Rwanda, Sao Tome & Principe, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Togo, Tunisia, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Benin, Botswana, Burundi, Cape Verde, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Congo, DR Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eswatini, and Ethiopia will also vie for qualification.
The qualifiers are set to begin in September 2024, aiming to determine the 24 nations that will compete in Morocco for the 35th edition of the AFCON tournament in 2025.
Ivory Coast currently holds the AFCON title, having won it on home soil.
The upcoming qualifiers promise to be exciting as teams from across the continent battle for a chance to participate in Africa's biggest football event.
The draw event will feature selected CAF legends, representatives from the participating teams, and members of the Local Organizing Committee for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
