FC Nordsjaelland’s rising star Caleb Marfo Yirenkyi has expressed his joy and pride after receiving his maiden call-up to the Ghana senior national team ahead of the Unity Cup in London.
The 19-year-old midfielder, a product of Ghana’s Right to Dream Academy, was one of five new faces named in Otto Addo’s 23-man squad for the four-nation tournament, which features Ghana, Nigeria, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago.
Reacting to the news on Instagram, Yirenkyi shared a heartfelt message:
"A childhood dream coming true. Proud of my first call up for Ghana."
Yirenkyi enjoyed a breakout season in the Danish Superliga, featuring in 18 matches, scoring two goals, and providing two assists in his debut senior campaign with FC Nordsjaelland.
His performances have caught the eye of Black Stars head coach Otto Addo, who is currently overseeing a squad rebuild with a focus on youth and long-term team cohesion.
Addo, speaking ahead of the match against Nigeria on Wednesday, May 28, emphasized the importance of giving young players a platform:
“Team building is a process that takes time… This is a great opportunity to give some of our young players a chance to prove themselves. We’re looking beyond individuals and focusing on building a strong team. That’s why I’ve decided to give many of these young players a chance to play and prove themselves, with the aim of making them a key part of my team going forward.”
Yirenkyi is expected to feature in the high-stakes clash with Nigeria at the Gtech Community Stadium, as Ghana aims for a fresh start with new energy and talent.
The winner of the Ghana vs. Nigeria clash will advance to the final on Saturday, May 31, to face Jamaica, who defeated Trinidad and Tobago 3-2 in their opening game.
