South Africa’s governing African National Congress (ANC) has confirmed that one of its MPs, Sibusiso Radebe, was shot dead last night in an attempted hijacking in Roodepoort, a city in the economic heartland of Gauteng province.

The party’s parliamentary caucus paid tribute to the lawmaker, in a tweet:


He was shot in the head and leg after the suspect allegedly demanded his phone, family member Lungile Dube told Mpumalanga News.

The family is currently in discussion with the police to ascertain the circumstances of his death. They are yet to identify Radebe’s body.
