Editor-in-chief of the New Crusading Guide newspaper, Abdul Malik Kweku Baako Jnr has said criticisms directed to Dr Mahamudu Bawumia by a section of Ghanaians over the depreciation of the cedi, is a fair one.

The Vice President in April 2017 said, in its first hundred days, the Government had been able to arrest the free fall of the cedi, locked it up and given the keys to the Inspector General of Police (IGP).

According to him, the interventions embarked on by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) led administration had helped to restore value in the local currency compared to what was bequeathed to them by the erstwhile National Democratic Congress (NDC) administration.

“For the year, the cedi has appreciated in value. When we came in, it was running. Essentially we have arrested it and the IGP has the keys, he’s locked it up”, Dr. Bawumia asserted in a humorous manner when he addressed a gathering to mark one hundred days in office by the NPP at the time.

But speaking on the issue on Kokrokoo on Peace FM Wednesday, Kweku Baako indicated although there was some sense of humor in what the Vice President said, Ghanaians could go ahead to criticism him.

“Look, Ghanians are right to criticize Bawumia..they are right. Yes! he infused some sense of humor there, when he said he had arrested the cedi but he said so. And that's why if Ghanaians are criticizing him they are so right”, said Kweku Baako.

The comments by Mr Baako come at a time that the cedi is experiencing relative instability compared to major international trading currencies such as the U.S dollar.

Over the last few weeks, the local currency has witnessed significant depreciation on the interbank foreign exchange market and across forex bureaus in the country.
