The Centre for Democratic Movement (CDM) has urged the government to immediately reverse the newly announced cocoa producer price of GH¢2,587 per 64kg bag, arguing that it falls short of commitments made to farmers during the election campaign.
In a statement dated February 12, 2026, the group insisted that the government must fulfil what it described as a clear pledge to pay “not less than GH¢6,000 per 64kg bag” to cocoa farmers.
The CDM further called for urgent consultations with cocoa farmers, their unions, and other key stakeholders to address concerns surrounding the price adjustment.
According to the group, the new price signals a worrying gap between government policy decisions and the realities facing rural communities that depend heavily on cocoa production.
“At a time when the cost of living is soaring and farm inputs are extremely expensive, the government has chosen to impoverish farmers further instead of empowering them,” the statement said.
The group characterised the price reduction as more than an economic misstep, describing it as a moral lapse and a breach of political trust. It maintained that cocoa farmers deserve fairness, transparency, and economic security rather than unfulfilled assurances.
The CDM pledged to continue pushing for equitable pricing structures and greater transparency in the management of the cocoa sector, stressing that farmers must be treated with dignity and respect.
