Chairman Wontumi to appear before CID today

Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi is expected to report to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service on Monday, October 6, 2025, in connection with an ongoing investigation into illegal mining activities.
His scheduled appearance follows a firm warning issued by Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, who stated on Friday, October 3, that an arrest warrant would be issued if the NPP regional chairman failed to show up. The Attorney General also confirmed that charges have already been signed against him.
The case involves Akonta Mining Limited, a company linked to Chairman Wontumi, which is under investigation for alleged operations in forest reserves without the necessary permits. Dr. Ayine recently revealed that prosecution efforts had stalled due to concealed dockets under the previous administration, but those files have now resurfaced.
Speaking to Citi News on Sunday, October 5, Andy Appiah Kubi, lawyer for Chairman Wontumi, confirmed his client will honour the CID invitation and dismissed the Attorney General’s public warning as unwarranted.
“We have been asked to appear at the police CID in Accra, which we are ready for and we will be there at 10am at the police CID headquarters.”
“This announcement by the Attorney General surprises me. I said, we respect the invitation and we will honour it but I think the warning that followed that announcement was unnecessary. We are not in anyway going to disrespect invitation,” he said.
