Kosovo struggles with exclusion from PayPal and Apple Pay due to lack of a state code in the UN database. Governor Ahmet Ismaili discusses financial challenges and hopes for future integration.

Financial Integration Remains a Challenge for Kosovo

Despite technological advancements and global connectivity, Kosovo continues to face hurdles in accessing leading digital payment platforms such as PayPal and Apple Pay. Central Bank Governor Ahmet Ismaili sheds light on the issue, pointing to the absence of Kosovo’s state code in the United Nations database as a critical barrier. While progress has been made with platforms like Google Pay, the road to full integration with global payment systems remains uncertain.

Kosovo’s Struggles with PayPal and Apple Pay

Governor Ahmet Ismaili has confirmed that Kosovo’s inclusion on PayPal and Apple Pay platforms is yet to be achieved. Speaking to KosovaPress, he explained that the absence of a state code in the UN database prevents the country from being recognized by these platforms.

“Although there has been a fair share of positive developments regarding Google Pay, with two banks in Kosovo successfully accessing the platform, there is no progress yet on Apple Pay and PayPal,” said Ismaili. He added that while temporary manual solutions have been implemented, they offer limited assistance and fail to address the root of the problem.

Economic Outlook and Banking Integration

Governor Ismaili also discussed broader economic trends and the profitability of Kosovo’s commercial banks in 2024. He highlighted the ongoing efforts to integrate the banking system in the north, which remains a key focus area for financial policymakers.

Another milestone on Kosovo’s horizon is its anticipated membership in the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA). Ismaili expressed optimism that Kosovo could join SEPA by 2025, which would save citizens and businesses an estimated €55 million annually through reduced transaction fees and streamlined cross-border payments.

Hopes for Future Progress

Despite the challenges, Ismaili remains hopeful about Kosovo’s financial integration. He emphasized the potential benefits of SEPA membership and the broader implications it would have for the country’s economy.

“From a perspective of expectations, we believe progress will eventually be realized. However, from today’s standpoint, advancements in this area remain very limited,” he remarked.

The successful integration of platforms like PayPal and Apple Pay would mark a significant step forward for Kosovo, facilitating smoother international transactions and boosting economic opportunities.

 Overcoming Barriers to Financial Inclusion

Kosovo’s exclusion from PayPal and Apple Pay underscores the ongoing challenges faced by countries lacking international recognition. As the country works towards joining SEPA and expanding its access to global payment platforms, the path to financial inclusion remains complex but not insurmountable. Governor Ismaili’s insights highlight both the hurdles and the hope for a more connected financial future for Kosovo.
