The Ghana Chamber of Mines has supported the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation’s effort at transforming scientific research and technological innovation in Ghana.
The chamber presented an amount of $100,000 to the sector Minister, Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, in honor of an earlier promise to support the Ministry’s initiative on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) training program to empower the next generation of researchers, problem solvers and leaders.
Early this year, the President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, as part of the educational reforms being undertaken by his government, directed the Ministry of Education, and the Ministry responsible for Science and Technology to draw up programs to strengthen and improve the study of STEM.
According to the president of the chamber, Kwame Addo Kufuor the chamber decided to support the Ministry’s STEM training initiative because it has the potential of making Ghana a reference point for scientific and technological advancement on the continent.
Professor Frimpong Boateng, upon assumption of office this year urged the prioritization of the use of science and technology to fast-track Ghana’s development.
According to him, the teaching of STEM must be reinforced in schools especially at the basic level to encourage the use of technology.
