The Ga Mantse, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, has announced moves to outlaw the involvement of children in fishing activities that interfere with their education within the Ga State.

Speaking at the 2026 Kinka Blonya celebrations, an annual New Year event for children held on Thursday, January 1, 2026, the traditional ruler said a by-law is being prepared to criminalise the practice. He warned that once the regulation is passed, parents who allow their children to engage in fishing at the expense of schooling will face arrest and prosecution.

According to the Ga Mantse, the proposed measure forms part of a broader strategy by traditional authorities in the Ga State to protect the future of children by promoting access to quality education.

He said all traditional leaders in the state have reached a consensus to prioritise education, stressing that the era of children missing school to engage in fishing is coming to an end.

King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II also highlighted ongoing educational support initiatives, including the provision of scholarships to about 1,000 schoolchildren, aimed at driving long-term socio-economic development in the Ga community.
“We are at a point where prioritising education in the Ga state is non-negotiable. We are providing over 1000 scholarships, therefore parents have no excuse to enrol their kids in schools. Let’s all come together and raise the Ga Children for the future” he said.
