The National Secretary of the Progressive People’s Party, (PPP), Murtala Mohammed Ahmed has called on President Nana Addo Darkwa Akufo-Addo to be very discreet in the selection a new Electoral commissioner.

This call follows the removal of the chairperson of the electoral commission and his two deputies, Madam Charlotte Osei, Alhaji Amadu Sulley and Madam Georgina Opoku Amankwa.

Their dismissal was after the Committee set up by the Chief Justice, Justice Sophia Akuffo, pursuant to Article 146(4) of the Constitution, to investigate separate complaints brought against the three persons by some staff of the Electoral Commission recommended their removal from office.

Madam Charlotte Osei and her two deputies were removed from office on the basis of stated misbehaviour and incompetence, pursuant to Article 146(1) of the Constitution.

Speaking on 3FM, Mr. Murtala, adviced the president to be prudent in his selection, asking him to select someone who will uplift the image of the commission and also restore trust and confidence in the Ghanaian people.

“We all know what the constitution say, who has the power to appoint an electoral commissioner, it’s the president, however we hope that the president should choose somebody, who is competent, of course qualified by the constitution” he said.

He noted that, since the president holds a political office, there is the tendency of appointing a political person or someone from the camp of the governing NPP.

According to him, the next person who will be made to head the commission must be generally accepted by the majority and must also show competency in being fit for the position.

The PPP is one of the political parties that express satisfaction at the removal of Madam Charlotte Osei.
