The National Communication Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi has described as ‘laughable’ charges preferred against him, the National Chairman, Mr Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo and Deputy Communication Officer, Kwaku Boahene by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service.

The Police CID, it would be recalled, extended a formal invitation to the NDC National Chairman to assist with investigations in leaked audio that captures him allegedly conspiring with party members to harm political opponents and also inciting supporters to attack certain officials including the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission.

The police have said some of Ofosu Ampofo’s comments have implications on national security.

Already, the NDC has said the tape is “doctored” and “fake”.

The opposition party’s initial comments were that its offices had been bugged following the circulation of the recordings and accused the government of engaging in illegal espionage.

Commenting on the charges against them in an interview Sammy Gyamfi said the charges are ‘weak and laughable’.

“Clearly when you hear of the charges against me, they are just laughable and weak…,” he said.

According to him, the CID charged him, his deputy and his chairman as part of the means to distracting the NDC from being hard on the Akufo-Addo administration.

“It is an attempt to just intimidate vociferous persons in the NDC from being consistent in their criticisms of the failing Akufo-Addo administration and a clear diversion from the falling cedi and growing levels of insecurity…,” he said.

He, however, warned that the charges will not stop the NDC from being hard on the government.

“But you see, we won’t lose focus, they cannot distract any of us…,” he said.
