The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service has begun an official investigation into a viral video posted by an American citizen, Arianna Naomi Mackey, who alleges she was abducted and robbed by five masked men posing as police officers during a snap check in Accra.
Police say initial findings show that the video was recorded at a hotel in the capital where Ms. Mackey had lodged with two other individuals during her stay in Ghana.
According to the CID, the group checked out of the hotel on December 5, 2025, the same day Ms. Mackey departed the country through the Kotoka International Airport.
Investigators, however, have encountered major difficulties in obtaining critical information from the complainant. Ms. Mackey reportedly told the police she could not identify the alleged attackers, nor provide the registration number of the vehicle supposedly used in the incident.
She also declined to share contact details of a friend who was said to be present at the time of the alleged abduction, explaining that the individual was unwilling to cooperate with the investigation.
The CID further revealed that the video in question has since been removed from her social media platforms, and all attempts to reach her through WhatsApp calls and messages have so far failed. Authorities say they are now exploring diplomatic avenues to secure her cooperation.
Speaking on the matter, the CID’s Public Relations Officer, Chief Inspector Brigitte Babanawo, assured the public that the Ghana Police Service is treating the allegations with the utmost seriousness and remains committed to establishing the full facts surrounding the case.
