Clubs must reject useless StarTimes TV rights deal - Bechem Unite owner

President and owner of Ghana Premier League side Bechem United has urged all premier League clubs to reject the peanuts handed them by Chinese Broadcasting company StarTimes.

Club have often complained that they receive too little money for what the pay TV require from them with Kotoko in particular clashing with StarTimes and the GFA at some point.

Speaking in an interview with Angel FM, Kingsley Owusu Achiaw called on the clubs to reject the deal and the GFA should abrogate the contract unless the Chinese company increase their bid.

“I will call on my colleagues to reject the startimes deal, the money they give us is laughable

"GFA should cancel the deal and open for new bids

The deal is useless.. if they will increase their bid fine, but this peanut should be rejected”he said.

Clubs in the Ghana Premier League receive an amount of $30,000 from StarTimes as part of a sponsorship deal between the Ghana Football Association and the broadcast company.

On the StarTimes broadcast deal, premier league clubs were informed that the total amount expected from StarTimes for the 2019/20 season is $700,000 out of which each Club will receive an amount $30,000 (18 X30 Clubs= $540,000). The remaining amount will be used to partially support administrative, the merit awards for positioning on the league table and officiating expenses," it was stated on the official website of the Football Association.

StarTimes won the bid to become to the Ghana Premier League’s exclusive broadcaster on television for a 5-year period worth USD 5.25 million.
