Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has commended the Ghana Premier League (GPL) for its growing quality, saying it is worthy of recognition on the international stage.
Speaking ahead of Ghana’s Unity Cup opener against Nigeria on Wednesday, the German-born tactician revealed that the domestic league played a major role in influencing some of his squad selections.
Addo handed call-ups to four local-based players — goalkeeper Benjamin Asare (Hearts of Oak), Razak Simpson (Nations FC), Kwame Opoku (Asante Kotoko), and Kamaradini Mamudu (Medeama SC) — for the Unity Cup campaign.
He stated that these selections are based on merit, describing the GPL as a league that continues to “showcase budding talents” capable of competing at the highest level.
“If you’ve watched our recent games, we’ve always had local players in our squad and also playing,” Addo said. “I rate the league very high, otherwise we wouldn’t have players in our squad who can compete on that level… and I’m looking forward to seeing them on that level.”
The four-time African champions are preparing to face arch-rivals Nigeria in their opening fixture of the Unity Cup on May 29, with a second game scheduled for May 31 against either Jamaica or Trinidad and Tobago.
Addo’s faith in local talent aligns with growing calls for increased domestic representation in the national team setup, and his remarks are expected to boost morale within the GPL as the season nears its conclusion.
