Former Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), Bashiru Ibrahim, has urged the government to prioritise completing the ongoing Accra–Kumasi dualisation project rather than diverting funds toward an entirely new expressway.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, Mr. Bashiru argued that substantial progress and investment have already been made on the dualisation project by successive administrations, and abandoning it midway would be fiscally irresponsible.
“Former President Kufuor started the Accra–Kumasi dualisation project from Nsawam to Nkawkaw. Former President Akufo-Addo continued from there to Apedwa Junction. We planned to put up eight bypasses on that road, at a total cost of about GH¢8.2 billion. As we speak, the government of former president Akufo-Addo has achieved almost 70%. We are just left with 30% to complete,” he explained.
He called on President John Dramani Mahama’s administration to finish the remaining portion, emphasising that doing so would ensure value for money and make immediate improvements to one of Ghana’s busiest highways.
“I think what President Mahama’s government should do, which will save us resources and be prudent in terms of financial management, is to continue and finish the 30%. If that is done, it will not take away the need for expansion. But for a government to commit about GH¢1.2 billion and execute a project up to 30%, and then come in as a new government to start a whole new expressway, that raises questions,” he said.
Mr. Bashiru stressed that completing ongoing infrastructure projects is not only more cost-effective but would also provide quick relief to commuters and boost economic activity along the corridor.
