The Adabraka District Court has postponed proceedings in the case involving Gifty Oppong, a police officer standing trial for the alleged fatal shooting of a taxi driver at Tetegu, setting a new hearing date for April 16, 2026.
When the case was called, the accused was absent from court. The prosecution explained that she remained in lawful custody but had not been presented before the court, prompting a request for an adjournment.
Defence lawyer Raymond Felli expressed frustration over the development, describing his client’s absence as regrettable. He noted that despite his appearance in court, no proceedings could take place and urged the court to consider awarding costs.
Family members of the deceased, some of whom had travelled long distances to attend the hearing, also voiced disappointment over the delay.
They criticised both the adjournment and the slow pace of the judicial process.
Gifty Oppong is accused of fatally shooting Edward Awuku Owusu, popularly known as Papa Kwesi, following a confrontation. She has been charged with murder but is yet to enter a plea and remains in custody.
The incident is reported to have occurred on January 19, 2026, in the Tetegu area near Weija in Accra. Preliminary investigations indicate that the victim was rushed to the Police Hospital after the shooting but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Police also disclosed that the accused sustained injuries to her head and legs after being struck by a vehicle while allegedly attempting to leave the scene. She was subsequently treated at a hospital.
Items retrieved from the scene included a live 9mm round, a magazine, and an empty 9mm cartridge, which are expected to form part of the prosecution’s evidence as the case continues.
