The Sehwi Wiawso Magistrate Court has granted bail to the matron and a cook of Awaso STEM Senior High School, who are facing charges over the alleged diversion of food supplies meant for students.
Presiding over the case, His Worship Eric Baah Boateng granted bail to Nyamadi Benedicta, the school’s matron, and Rachel Kyeremateng, a cook, after they were arraigned on charges of stealing.
Prosecutors allege that large quantities of food items earmarked for students were secretly transported to a private residence at Atronsu, within the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipality of the Western North Region.
The items said to be involved in the alleged diversion include 21 bags of rice, six gallons of cooking oil, 40 tins of tomatoes, four boxes of milk, a bag of sugar, as well as quantities of maize, millet, gari, and other foodstuffs.
Meanwhile, the case has taken a new turn with the arrest of Hannah Dufie, the assistant matron of the school. Police say preliminary investigations have linked her to the alleged offence.
All three suspects are expected to return to court on January 12, 2026, as investigations continue into the matter, which has sparked public concern over the welfare of students and the management of school feeding supplies.
The case adds to growing scrutiny over the handling of resources in public educational institutions, with many calling for stricter oversight to safeguard student welfare.
