The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Major General William Agyapong, has defended the use of cocoa sacks in transporting the remains of the eight victims of the August 6 military helicopter crash, following public criticism over the handling of the deceased.

Addressing members of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) during a meeting on Wednesday, August 13, Major General Agyapong said the decision was made under difficult conditions due to the severe burning of the bodies, which rendered standard body bags unusable.

“It was in the thick forest, and it was getting late. We had the option of leaving the remains there until the following day, but we knew what would have happened to the bodies. So, the team decided to use the available materials to move them to higher ground,” he explained.

He explained that the operation was conducted under challenging and urgent circumstances, and that the priority was to preserve the remains with dignity given the limitations on the ground.

Major General Agyapong also revealed that search operations are still ongoing in the area to recover all human remains and parts of the aircraft.

“As I speak, personnel on the ground are expanding the search daily because we do not yet know the full extent of the wreckage,” he added.
