Daddy Lumba’s widow drags family head and ‘odo broni’ to court over funeral dispute
10th October 2025
Akosua Serwaa Fosu, the legally wedded wife of late highlife icon Charles Kwadwo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba, has taken legal action against the head of his extended family, Kofi Owusu Fosu, and one Priscilla Ofori, also known as Odo Broni, over disagreements surrounding the musician’s funeral arrangements.
In a writ filed at the High Court in Kumasi on October 3, 2025, and expected to be heard on October 16, 2025, Mrs. Fosu is asking the court to officially recognise her as the only surviving spouse of the late musician and the sole person entitled to perform widowhood rites at his funeral.
Daddy Lumba passed away on July 26, 2025. His extended family has since announced plans to hold the final funeral rites at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi on December 6, 2025 — a decision Mrs. Fosu says was made without consulting her or their children.
Legal Claims and Requests
Through her suit, Akosua Serwaa Fosu seeks several declarations from the court, including:
- A ruling confirming her status as the only legal wife of the late musician.
- A declaration that she alone has the right to perform all widowhood and funeral rites.
- An order barring family head Kofi Owusu Fosu from recognising Odo Broni as Lumba’s wife.
- An injunction preventing Odo Broni from publicly presenting herself as the musician’s widow.
Marriage and Family Background
Mrs. Fosu explained in her statement that she and the late musician were legally married under German law at the Civil Marriage Registry in Bornheim, Germany.
The couple lived together and had three children — Calvin, Charlyn, and Ciara — before his passing.
She maintains that their marriage remained valid and legally binding at the time of Lumba’s death.
Exclusion and Disrespect Allegations
According to her, she has been deliberately excluded from the funeral planning process by the family head, who allegedly told her she would not be permitted to perform widowhood rites.
She also claims that Odo Broni, who has since emerged claiming to be Lumba’s wife, is being wrongfully recognised by the family as such and has even been listed on printed funeral invitations.
Mrs. Fosu argues that unless the court intervenes, she will be unfairly denied her rightful place as the lawful wife of the late highlife legend.
She insists her legal action is to ensure justice, respect, and cultural propriety in honouring Daddy Lumba’s memory.
