Former Black Stars defender Dan Quaye has expressed that he wasn't surprised by Ghana's 2-0 defeat to Sudan in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

The loss, which took place at the Martyrs February Stadium in Benghazi, Libya, further jeopardizes Ghana's chances of qualifying for the tournament.

Sudan scored twice shortly after halftime through Ahmed Mohamed and Abdelrahman, sealing a crucial victory that puts them on the verge of qualification.

Ghana, captained by West Ham United's Mohammed Kudus, is now at risk of missing the AFCON finals for the first time since 2004.

Speaking to Bryt FM, Dan Quaye, a former Hearts of Oak defender, criticized the Black Stars' lack of commitment and mentality on the field.

"I’m not surprised with the defeat. The performance they exhibited at the Accra Sports Stadium isn’t the same performance shown in Libya.

From the blast of the whistle, I realized things were going to be tough for Ghana because the players didn’t show any sign of commitment and winning mentality on the field of play,” Quaye said.

With Sudan needing just one point from their remaining matches against Niger and Angola to eliminate Ghana, the Black Stars face an uphill battle.

They currently trail second-placed Sudan by five points in Group F and must now visit in-form Angola, who reached the quarter-finals of the 2024 AFCON.
