Daniel Kyereh makes emotional return to competitive football after long injury
Ghana midfielder Daniel-Kofi Kyereh has made his long-awaited return to competitive football, almost three years after suffering a serious knee injury that threatened to derail his career.
The 29-year-old came off the bench in the 66th minute as VfL Osnabrück secured victory over Bochum in the 2. Bundesliga, playing the final 24 minutes of the match.
For Kyereh, the appearance was about much more than football. It marked his first senior competitive outing since February 2023 and the latest chapter in a long and difficult road back.
Kyereh suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury during training with SC Freiburg in February 2023. The setback kept him out for nearly three years, with his last competitive appearance coming in Freiburg’s 2-0 Bundesliga defeat by VfB Stuttgart on 11 February 2023.
What followed was a prolonged rehabilitation process that tested the Ghana international both physically and mentally. Kyereh has previously spoken about how difficult the period became, admitting that there were moments when he questioned whether he would ever play football again.
His return therefore carries a significance that goes well beyond the 24 minutes he spent on the pitch.
Kyereh joined Osnabrück as a free agent this summer after his contract with Freiburg expired, giving him the opportunity to rebuild his career in familiar surroundings.
He has also been reunited with head coach Timo Schultz, who worked with Kyereh during his most productive period at FC St Pauli.
The midfielder flourished under Schultz at St Pauli, earning recognition for his creativity, attacking movement and ability to contribute goals from midfield.
Now, after years on the sidelines, Kyereh can finally begin looking forward again.
The Ghanaian has won 18 caps for the Black Stars and was part of the squad at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where he featured in Ghana’s memorable campaign.
His international career also includes one of the defining moments of his time with the national team, a goal against South Korea at the World Cup.
After almost three years of uncertainty, the midfielder is back where he belongs: on the football pitch.
