Most people who get on a weight loss journey often have one tricky question on their mind- what is more important, exercise or weight loss? Though it is generally said that if your dream is to get into a perfect shape, then both exercise and diet play a crucial role. You cannot get a toned body in absence of any one of the two.

But the basic question still remains the same, what is more important? Let’s discuss this in detail: What the study says As per various studies, the diet you follow is far more vital than your workout routine for weight loss. All the calories you take come from the food you eat and the beverages you drink. But when you exercise alone and do not control your calorie intake, only a portion of the calories you have consumed will get burned.
As per Alexxai Kravitz, an investigator at the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, there are three ways of energy expenditure.
Basal metabolic rate (The amount of energy it takes to perform a basic function)
Breaking down food (Referred to as "diet-induced thermogenesis" or "specific dynamic action")
Physical activity
The basal metabolic rate consumes 60 to 80 percent of the total energy produced by the body. About 10 percent of calories are used to digest the food we eat, which means that only about 10 to 30 percent of calories are lost through physical activity.

Kravitz says that physical activity includes everything like running, walking and exercising. So, as per the data, if only 10 to 30 percent of the total calories are burnt from physical activities, then exercise is a subset of that number.

He elaborates that a professional only burns 5 to 15 percent of their daily calorie intake through exercise. Moreover, exercising increases appetite.

So, it is important to control the diet you intake to lose weight fast and effectively.

Bottom lineHowever, this does not mean that you should stop exercising. Exercise is very important if you want to build body strength and improve flexibility. It is recommended to exercise daily to keep yourself healthy and fit.
