Private legal practitioner and social activist, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, has warned the ruling government, National Democratic Congress (NDC) that some of its recent actions risk alienating public support and damaging its electoral prospects ahead of the next general elections.
His warning comes in the wake of the arrest and subsequent release of New Patriotic Party (NPP) youth activist, Alfred Ababio Kumi, popularly known as Adenta Kumi, by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB).
In a Facebook post on Saturday, May 24, Mr. Barker-Vormawor dismissed Kumi’s pre-arrest behavior as mere attempts to distract the government.
However, he criticised the response by security agencies, saying it reflects a pattern of overzealous policing.
“This feels like the umpteenth time I have to rebuke the NDC about the risk of overzealous policing. If you keep getting distracted by Ababio Kumi’s. If every person coughs wrong and you feel the need to send in 20 security officers to arrest them, you will be led down a path of no return," he said.
Mr.Barker-Vormawor cautioned that the current administration appears to be repeating the same mistakes made by the previous NPP government which he believes contributed to their eventual loss of power.
He was clear in his stance that only arrests tied directly to the government's Operation Recover All Loots (ORAL) initiative which is aimed at retrieving stolen public funds and assets deserve public support.
“I will support the government when it makes ORAL arrests. But if someone engages in unnecessary propaganda and you feel the need to show them where power lies. Listen, that power will leave you.”
He called on the NDC to stay focused on its core mandate and avoid being derailed by partisan provocations, warning that such distractions could undermine both its governance and long-term political future.
