Did the headline of our story surprise you? We are sure it did. We all have read multiple articles about cleaning our teeth properly, flossing them, changing our brush from time to time and what not but we never heard that disinfecting the toothbrush is a thing.
Read on to find the answer.
Our mouth is home to millions of germs and bacteria. And the moment you put your brush in your mouth, things become even worse if your toothbrush is not clean. What should we do?The human body is constantly exposed to harmful bacteria, most of which it can easily fight. There are various ways to disinfect a toothbrush but experts say it’s absolutely not mandatory to disinfect your toothbrush.
A contaminated brush can lead to re-contamination of mouth that can even lead to oral infection, claims a study. But no such cases have been reported yet. In fact, some of the cleaning methods like UV light cleaning or cleaning with a dishwasher can even damage your toothbrush, making it less effective.
While you can choose to skip disinfecting your toothbrush, there are other ways with which you can limit the risk of toothbrush contamination.

- Do not share your toothbrush with anyone.

- Rinse the brush with tap water until it is completely clean and then air dry it.

- Keep your toothbrush covered with a plastic cap so that it does not touch another brush.

- Do not keep your brush in a drawer or cabinet because bacteria grows best in dark and moist environment.

Important tipEvery toothbrush has an expiration time. Do not use a toothbrush for more than 3 months.
