The President has appointed Dr. George Kojo Owusu as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Ambulance Service (NAS), in line with Article 195(1) of the 1992 Constitution and Section 18(1) of the National Ambulance Service Act, 2020 (Act 1041).
This follows the dismissal of Dr. Nuhu Zakaria from his role as CEO.
The announcement was made in a statement from NAS’s Public Relations Unit on Thursday, July 11, 2025.
Dr. Owusu, an experienced Emergency Physician Specialist and chartered administrator, brings over two decades of expertise in emergency medical services.
He also holds a Master of Arts in Health Law and Ethics from the University of Ghana School of Law. Before his appointment, Dr. Owusu served as Medical Director of Health Services at Takoradi Technical University, where he significantly contributed to improving healthcare and emergency preparedness.
The statement, signed by Mr. Simmons Yussif Kewura, Deputy Director of Public Relations at NAS, explained that Dr. Owusu’s appointment comes at a pivotal time as the Service aims to expand operations, reduce response times, and increase coverage nationwide.
“The National Ambulance Service welcomes Dr. Owusu’s appointment and expresses confidence in his leadership to drive innovation, institutional growth, and strategic reforms aimed at improving service delivery across all regions,” the release noted.
NAS management and staff have pledged their full support to Dr. Owusu as he steps into the leadership role of this critical national emergency response agency.
His appointment is expected to strengthen efforts to modernize Ghana’s emergency medical services and align NAS with international best practices in pre-hospital care.
