Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has pledged to enhance grassroots sports development in Ghana through the establishment of the Ghana School Sports Secretariat.

This ambitious initiative, introduced during a major policy address earlier this year, is now a prominent feature of the NPP's manifesto.

In his recent address, Dr. Bawumia outlined his vision for the Secretariat, which aims to integrate sports and education from the school level.

He emphasized the critical role this new agency will play, stating that it will operate under the ministry responsible for sports and work in collaboration with key stakeholders, including the Ghana Education Service (GES) and sports federations.

The Ghana School Sports Secretariat is expected to receive annual budgetary allocations to ensure the sustainable development of school sports, addressing a long-standing issue of inadequate funding.

This move reflects Dr. Bawumia’s commitment to nurturing young talent and creating a robust foundation for future sports excellence.

Further expanding on his sports vision, Dr. Bawumia expressed intentions to forge partnerships with international sports organizations to position Ghana as a leading hub for emerging sports in Africa.

He highlighted plans to collaborate with prominent entities such as the NBA and NFL to create more opportunities for Ghanaian youth.

"My government will also seek school-level collaboration with international sports bodies like the NBA and NFL to make Ghana a hub for these emerging sports in Africa, to create more opportunities for young people," he said.

Notably, efforts in this direction have already commenced with the NFL, marking the beginning of a broader strategy to bring global sports opportunities to Ghana.

Dr. Bawumia’s plans underscore a significant commitment to developing sports infrastructure and opportunities from the grassroots level, aiming to enhance Ghana’s standing in the global sports arena.
