Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia unveils ambitious plans for Ghana's Olympic success in 2028
19th August 2024
Ghana's Vice President and NPP Flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has set an ambitious goal for the nation: achieving Olympic glory at the 2028 Games in Los Angeles.
Despite Ghana's vast potential in various sports, the country has historically underperformed at the Olympics, securing only five medals in its history, with just one medal won during the 4th Republic at the Tokyo Olympics three years ago.
In a bid to reverse this trend and unlock Ghana's full sporting potential, Dr. Bawumia announced comprehensive plans that his future government intends to implement.
These plans include sustainable funding mechanisms, targeted development programs, and a specific initiative focused on Olympic success.
During the launch of the NPP Manifesto in Takoradi on Sunday, Dr. Bawumia introduced the "Operation Olympics Glory" program.
This initiative will allocate resources specifically for the preparation and readiness of Ghanaian athletes aiming to compete in the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.
As part of this program, Dr. Bawumia emphasized that his government will strategically target specific sports where Ghana has the potential to win medals, ensuring that resources are directed towards maximizing the country's chances of success.
In addition to the Olympics-focused initiative, Dr. Bawumia outlined a broader vision for sports development in Ghana.
He announced plans to establish a Ghana School Sports Secretariat, a dedicated body that will drive the sustainable development of grassroots sports through schools.
This initiative will be implemented in collaboration with key stakeholders, including the Ghana Education Service and various sports federations.
Dr. Bawumia's plans reflect a commitment to transforming Ghana's sports landscape and achieving long-awaited success on the global stage at the Olympics.
