A driver and his mate have narrowly escaped death after armed robbers attacked a cargo truck on the Bibiani–Goaso road near Sereso in the Atwima Mponua District.

The victim, Mohammed Yakubu, 60, was driving a Mitsubishi cargo truck from Akodie towards Kumasi when the incident occurred late at night, just minutes from a stretch recently associated with a separate attack involving Berekum Chelsea FC.

Eyewitnesses say the robbers blocked the road between 9:30 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. and opened fire as the truck approached, shooting the driver in the abdomen.

An eyewitness, Sampson Dwumah, told Adom News that the mate quickly ran to a nearby community to raise the alarm. Residents responded promptly and transported the injured driver on a tricycle to the Bibiani Government Hospital for emergency treatment.

Residents of Sereso say they are increasingly living in fear due to recurring armed robbery attacks along the road and are appealing to the Inspector-General of Police to deploy regular checkpoints to improve security.

Authorities are yet to officially comment on the incident as investigations continue.
