A 27-year-old driver’s mate, Edem Avenyo, has been sentenced to three months’ imprisonment for stealing GH¢7,000 and a mobile phone at Tema Station in Accra.
Avenyo, who appeared before the Gbese District Court, pleaded guilty to the theft charge and was convicted based on his own admission.
The court heard that after taking the phone, Avenyo used it to take a selfie and even uploaded the image to the complainant’s WhatsApp status. He was later apprehended at his hideout.
During sentencing, Avenyo asked the court for leniency, pledging to work, repay the stolen money, and replace the phone. Despite his plea, the court sentenced him to three months in prison.
Prosecutor Inspector Isaac Agyemang told the court that the complainant, a public transport driver from Aplaku in Accra, parked his vehicle at the Tema Station car park behind the National Lotteries Authority on October 24, 2025, and slept inside with his mate, Godwin Owusu.
Around 4:00 a.m. the following day, the driver discovered that his Samsung Galaxy smartphone, valued at GH¢2,900, and GH¢7,000 in cash kept under the vehicle seat were missing.
Later that morning, Owusu called the complainant’s phone, which Avenyo answered. He refused to return it. On October 26, 2025, Avenyo took a photo of himself using the stolen phone and uploaded it to the complainant’s WhatsApp status.
Avenyo was eventually arrested on December 19, 2025, near the COCOBOD area. Investigations revealed that he had sold the phone in Nsawam for GH¢800 and spent the GH¢7,000 cash.
