Dutch-Ghanaian defender Derek Agyakwa signs for Volos FC
29th January 2026
Dutch-born Ghanaian defender Derek Emmanuel Adjei Agyakwa has completed a move to Greek Super League side Volos FC, continuing a career that has quietly gathered momentum across Europe.
The 24-year-old arrives in Greece on the back of a highly successful spell in Georgia, where he played a central role in Iberia 1999’s recent dominance of domestic football.
Agyakwa’s journey began in the Netherlands at FC Twente’s academy, before he took an early leap abroad in January 2020, joining Premier League club Watford. He made his senior debut later that year, featuring in an EFL Cup victory over Oxford United, and soon gained further experience with a loan move to Italian side Como.
After leaving Watford, the defender continued to build his career in England, turning out for Port Vale and spending time on loan at Chorley, where regular first-team football helped sharpen his game.
His move to Iberia 1999 in February 2024 proved a turning point. Agyakwa quickly became a key figure, helping the club win back-to-back Erovnuli Liga titles in 2024 and 2025. Over two seasons, he made 72 appearances in all competitions and crowned his time in Georgia by scoring in the 2025 Georgian Cup final.
Now, the switch to Volos represents another step up. The Greek Super League offers a higher profile platform, and Agyakwa is expected to bring versatility, composure and valuable continental experience to a Volos side looking to strengthen for the new campaign.
For the Ghanaian defender, Greece is the latest stop in a career shaped by steady progress rather than headlines and one that continues to move in the right direction.
