The chances of Nana Wereko-Ampim Opoku, a leading member of the New Patriotic Party and Member of the Council of Elders for the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency, keeps soaring as a likely replacement for the late Hon. Emmanuel Kyeremateng Agyarko whose sudden demise on November 21 in the USA has left a huge vacuum in the new patriotic party and parliament.

On Thursday, executives from the various polling stations in the Dworwulu Electoral Area called on Nana Wereko-Ampim at his residence in East Legon to pledge their unflinching support for his candidature.

Spokesperson to Nana Wereko-Ampim, Mr. Benjamin Akowuah Acheampong, welcomed the group led by Chairman Daniel Kissi aka Kwame Tailor, the Polling Station Chairman of Dzorwulu Methodist.

In his remarks he noted that “their reason for calling on him was to confirm rumours of his candidature for the vacant seat and to pledge their support for the instrumental role he has been playing to ensure unity within the party”.

According to them, they believe strongly that Nana Wereko-Ampim is the only candidate who can maintain the seat for the NPP and consolidate the gains made by the Nana Akufo-Addo led government for victory in 2020.

Nana Wereko-Ampim in addressing the delegates affirmed his decision to contest the NPP primaries and subsequently the by-election to maintain the seat for the NPP.

He reiterated his commitment to ensure unity and development during his reign.

He outlined the various works he has been doing in building the constituency. He took the opportunity to outline his vision for the party and constituents should he be elected to lead the party.

Sources close to Wereko-Ampim’s campaign team have revealed that, other 5 electoral area coordinators out of the 11 Electoral Areas within the Constituency have also pledged their support for him as well.

Nana Wereko-Ampim urged them to continue to uphold the peace the party is enjoying in the Constituency now, and remember the family of the deceased MP in prayers.

The Electoral Commission has however hinted that a by-election will be held on 29th January, 2019 for the replacement of Hon. Agyarko in the parliament of Ghana.

NPP’s internal battle

Meanwhile, there seems to be disagreement within the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituencybranch of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) over who to replace the deceased legislator.

Earlier this month, two groups of people from within the party launched vigorous campaigns for two of Mr. Agyarko’s wives to contest.

Emmanuel Agyarko passed away on Wednesday, November 21 in the United States where he was flown to by his family for medical care.

As a member of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Agarko had been the MP for the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency since 2012, after he replaced the current Chief of Staff, Frema Opare as MP for the area.

A pharmacist by profession, he was once the Chief Executive of the Food and Drugs Authority, during President Kufuor time in office.

In Parliament, he served on the Environment, Science and Technology Committee, chaired the Government Assurance Committee, and also served on the Health Committee.
